Just outside the boundaries of the National Park itself, seven other communities lie at the foot of the nature reserve. The village of Prad am Stilfserjoch/Prato allo Stelvio in the center of the National Park Region is an ideal starting point for challenging hikes, breath-taking excursions and winter ski tours into the National Park Region.
Surrounded by the green fields of the Upper Vinschgau/Val Venosta Valley, the area around this vibrant village at the foot of the Stelvio National Park extends from Spondinig/Spondigna (about 900 m) on the main road that runs through the Vinschgau Valley, to the Lichtenberger Höfe/Montechiaro Masi at 1,500 m. The picturesque satellite communities of Agums/Agumes and Lichtenberg/Montechiaro lie perched on the slopes of the National Park that extend up to the Lichtenberger Alm mountain pastures and the associated mountain farms. Above Prad am Stilfserjoch, lie the ruins of the once mighty fortress of Lichtenberg while in the village centre, the
interactive aquaprad Visitor Centre concentrates on the theme of water life and the fish of the Ortler Region.
