Winter Hiking in the Stelvio National Park
The winter mountain landscape in the Ortler area
The Ortler shows its most beautiful side in the white winter season. Yet, with its own special microclimate, the looming Sonnenberg mountain in the neighbouring Vinschgau/Val Venosta Valley is hardly ever covered in snow. Just a few kilometres to the interior lies the Stelvio National Park, which is almost entirely cloaked in snow. It’s ideal for long winter hikes in the Ortler Group, through snow-covered forests.
The conditions in the Ortler Cevedale Mountain Group on the plateaus are ideal for hiking in the pure mountain air. Winter trails cross through the forests and snow-covered pastures, passing refuges, huts and mountain taverns along the way. From the windswept summits, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the Ortler Mountains and the Ötztal Alps. For example on the Sulden/Solda Panoramic Trail, on the hiking trails to the Three Holy Fountains and to the Weißen Knott/Rocca Bianca at Trafoi, to Prad/Prato-Lichtenberg/Montechiaro and across the Schwemmalm meadows in the Ultental/Val d’Ultimo Valley.
