The naturatrafoi Visitor Centre on the Stilfserjoch Pass Road

The Geology of the Ortler-Cevedale Mountains

In the village of Trafoi along the Stilfserjoch/Stelvio Pass, the naturatrafoi Visitor Centre shows how nature has successfully managed to adapt in this high Alpine region. With sometimes extreme weather conditions as well as the unique geology of the Ortler, both animals and plants have had to evolve a number of ingenious survival strategies.

EXHIBITION

Living on the edge

The exhibition thus offers fascinating insights into the geology of the Ortler Cevedale Mountain Group and into the survival, adaptations and strategies of plants and animals under the extreme climatic conditions of the high mountains.
Only a few specialist plants can withstand the inhospitable and rough conditions beyond the tree line. Impressive photo panels, an exhibition cinema, as well as rocks and furs introduce visitors to the ‘Life on the Edge’. For our little visitors, we have prepared some games, fairy-tale listening stations, as well as a stone puzzle for ‘active understanding’.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

Baby animals - Born To Be Wild

Whether large or small, predators or herbivores, the start of life is a challenge for all new-born mammals.
The temporary exhibition focuses on natural threats to their existence, together with increasing agricultural mechanization and other dangers posed by humans.
On display until March 2025.
The special exhibition “The Amphibians of South Tyrol” will follow from May 2025.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS

Nature's traces

In the naturatrafoi Visitor Centre, the artist Tania Wallnöfer exhibits a series of animal and landscape paintings.
Her paintings in oil, acrylic, Japanese ink as well as her drawings in charcoal and pastel chalk on paper and canvas, show her love for nature and her homeland.
As a trained glass and porcelain painter and her many years of experience as a glass designer in Tokyo, her appropriation of the Japanese language, both written and spoken, allows her to incorporate Far Eastern stylistic elements into her works, which are reflected in the dynamic style of the animal figures and in the white of the glaciers.

The exhibition is on display until 26.10.2024.
